Playing in the "Creative Capital"

Being the “Creative Capital” is no passive task: Providence’s moniker comes with a demand for constant artistic output and vibrance. Between the students of RISD constructing and expressing, the historic flow of multicultural immigrants bringing cuisine as well as customs, and the city’s maintenance of traditions such as Water Fire, Providence seems to bear its title deservedly. It is hard to imagine the burgeoning city without these powerful cultural components, and, accordingly, the diversity of its people, interests, and practices serves as a point of pride for many who reside in Rhode Island’s capital. The streets are populated by artists, entrepreneurs, and critical thinkers, among others. While these individuals and groups might appear to be mere products of the creative flow that energizes Providence, rather, they contribute to and perpetuate the city’s celebratory title: the city’s tallest towers, its homiest restaurants, and its brightest theaters serve as a testament to the endless hours of past and present vision offered by her dwellers.

Through the tenacity and prescience of Roger Williams, the narrative talents of H.P. Lovecraft, the pioneering native Narragansetts, the city challenges its present inhabitants to offer their own ability towards its cultural construction. As new enterprises dot the coastline, as new makers flock to the resurgent Providence, the Rogues of Providence City FC look to build a community focused on creation. PCFC, in collaborating with Providence businesses, in fielding players who know what the city has come to stand for, in offering the residents of the very “Creative Capital” an outlet to express themselves along lines of resistance, of being Rogue, is again both the product of the city’s history and an active force in its metamorphosis. It seems fitting for the city to be adorned by the Rogues: players of the world’s game on local terms. With this claim comes a fundamental realization. Providence City FC could not exist without the Rogues living in Providence. The team, in its privileged status as an outcrop of Rhode Island life, counts on the “Creative Capital” to not only support its own creative efforts, but also to inspire them.
